Getting started

Do I need a referral?

You can contact us directly, and many people do. A referral is not required for a private appointment.

A referral matters in two situations. If you would like Medicare rebates for psychological therapy, you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP. If your assessment or treatment is funded by a third party, such as the NDIS, DVA or WorkCover, the funder usually requires a referral or approval before we begin.

If you are unsure which applies to you, call us and we will talk it through before anything is booked.

How long will I wait for an appointment?

You will receive confirmation when your request reaches us, and our team will be in touch to arrange next steps. Waiting times vary with the type of appointment and change over time, so we do not publish a fixed figure. Send an enquiry or give us a call and we will give you an honest, current estimate for what you need.

If your situation is urgent, please say so when you contact us.

Costs and funding

What does an appointment cost?

Our fees are time-based and listed in full on our Fees and Policies page. As a guide, consultations are charged by the hour, from $240 to $280 depending on the clinician you see, and the same rate applies whether it is an initial or a follow-up consultation.

A neuropsychological assessment involves more than one appointment: a clinical interview, a testing session, and time for scoring, interpretation and a written report. The total depends on the referral question and the assessment involved. We quote it at intake and confirm the fee with you before we begin.

How you secure a booking depends on the service: therapy is paid before your appointment, with any Medicare rebate processed within 2 business days, and a privately funded assessment has a $300 booking fee that is credited to the total. Our cancellation and refund policy is on the Fees and Policies page.

Will Medicare cover my appointment?

For psychological therapy, yes in part. With a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, Medicare currently rebates $141.85 per session with a clinical psychologist (or $96.65 with a registered psychologist) for up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year, with a GP review after the first six.

Neuropsychological assessment is not covered by the Medicare Better Access program, so there is no standard Medicare rebate for assessment. Assessments are commonly funded privately or through the NDIS, DVA, WorkCover Queensland, icare (NSW), CTP insurers or employer programs. We will confirm the funding pathway with you before booking, so there are no surprises.

On the day

How should I prepare for an assessment?

Three things help more than anything else: be rested, bring your glasses or hearing aids if you use them, and bring a list of your current medications.

It also helps to bring any previous reports or scans you have, and, where possible, someone who knows you well. Family members often notice changes that are hard to describe yourself, and with your consent we may ask them a few questions.

Assessment relies on your best effort on the day. If you are acutely unwell, tell us; rescheduling is often the right call and we would rather move the appointment than test you unwell.

How long does an assessment take?

Plan for a morning or an afternoon. The clinical interview usually runs about an hour, and testing commonly takes two to three hours with breaks. Some assessments are shorter and some are split over two visits; we confirm the expected format with you when booking. Results are explained at a feedback appointment once scoring and interpretation are complete.

Telehealth and location

Can I attend by telehealth?

Yes. We offer secure video and phone consultations across Australia, and telehealth works well for interviews, feedback sessions and therapy. Some cognitive tests must be administered in person to be valid, so for assessments we will advise which parts, if any, need to be face to face.

Where are you located?

We are based in Southport on the Gold Coast and are currently relocating to new premises. Phone, email and fax are unchanged, and appointments continue as scheduled; our team will confirm arrangements with you when booking. The new clinic address will be announced soon.
